Aldi launches into delivery with DoorDash

Aldi announced last Tuesday a new partnership with DoorDash to enter the delivery market for groceries in a bid to compete with Coles and Woolworths. The trial is in Canberra and shoppers can purchase all fresh product and 1800 products. The partnership is expected to roll out nationwide in future. DoorDash has in the past added a markup to products sold through their service from the supermarkets such as IGA and this ranged from 10% to 25% plus any delivery fees. Online shopping accounts for 10% to 14% of the total grocery sold through the two major supermarkets and the basket size of an online shop is twice that of the average trolley size in brick-and-mortar stores. The costs of providing online shopping would be high however these big shop customers are a valuable market. Aldi’s special buys are not available via the DoorDash service.
