Coles transitions to paper bag for Mandarins

Coles will be selling mandarins in a recyclable paper bag in a move estimated to saw 11 tonnes of plastic this year with the Coles Unique selection (premium) mandarins to no longer be sold in orange plastic net bags. Charlotte Gilbert, Coles fresh produce general manager has stated the change was to reduce waste. The supermarket will continue selling the mini pack of mandarins and I’m perfect (misshapen/odd size) ranges in the plastic bags for now. All states except WA will

have recyclable bags. The ads in their catalogue feature endorsement from Planet Ark. This week Coles unique selection is 85 cents more expensive per KG than Woolworths prepack mandarins in NSW.

Coles’ sustainability target is 100% of Coles brands in recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025, in FY 23 this was sitting at 84%. We are seeing more innovation in paper and cardboard packaging as major retailers work towards their stated sustainability targets.
