Aldi has decided against expanding into online shopping to maintain its low-cost product offerings. Aldi ran a trial in 2022 where shoppers could purchase limited Special Buys items online, but the company disbanded its online team last year after considering the impact on its cost structure. In August 2023 Aldi once again signalled it would look at launching online shopping at a Parliamentary enquiry however it now seems Aldi has abandoned this idea.
Jordan Lack, Aldi MD of buying, emphasised that Aldi prioritises low prices over convenience. A report from Choice highlighted that Aldi’s grocery basket was $17 cheaper than Woolworths and Coles. Additionally, managing online shopping would be complex as Aldi are still building an automated distribution centre. Aldi aims to grow by attracting new customers and targeting growth corridors on the outskirts of major cities. Aldi has 570 stores and has seen a 5.1% increase in new households shopping at Aldi in the past three months, “Customers are coming for the price, but we are holding them because of quality”, says Lack.
