Amazon is seeing massive customer growth vs their brick-and-mortar peers over the last 12 months.

As many retail brands face challenges in maintaining sales and attracting new customers amid the cost-of-living crisis, Amazon continues to defy this trend by expanding its annual customer base by 1.1 million people in the year leading up to June 2024, compared to the previous year.

Currently, 7.9 million Australians aged 14 and older shop on Amazon at least once a year, an increase from 6.8 million in the year to June 2023. In contrast, David Jones and Target have experienced significant declines in their customer bases, with losses of 5% and 7%, respectively, over the past 12 months. Meanwhile, Big W and Myer have maintained stable customer numbers. JB HiFi stands out as the only other retailer to have gained customers, with an increase of 300,000 this year.
